Today is a historical day in America. The step toward peace and equality that our nation (finally) took today can’t go without mention. As one of my heroes, John Lennon stated; “All you need is love.” Indeed, it is usually the simplest things that bring the deepest truths. All these years, people were only fighting for was the right to have their love recognized. Today, love won.
While I celebrate the fact that the Supreme Court ruled that everyone has a right to marriage, despite gender, I won’t sugar coat it. I’m a radical liberal who feels adamantly about matters on which our nation continues to be a disgrace. I mean, we are 14 years behind the Netherlands and 10 years behind Canada in this ruling. The overall American “policy” needs to catch up on matters of equality. Please don’t tell me I’m not a good American. I’ve heard it all, and I by no means strive to be a “good” anything – that would be mediocre. I aim to be the best version of me each day, and that means embracing and sharing my own truths as they evolve and change.
My wife and I just celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary last month. Aside from my own personal spiritual journey, my marriage to this woman has been the single greatest source of wisdom and growth in my life. I have known what it is like to go through life with a best friend. As a true team, we are seeing each other through all the pain and joy of living. We have the stability of knowing we are not alone as we explore the complicated reality of being a souls living in human bodies. Love, the most ultimate experience, the strongest power in the universe, is what America has given people the “right” to acknowledge today. I’m tearing up as I write this, thinking about the fact that others might now get to fully (legally) know this experience. Cheers, America. Let’s keep going forward in the direction of love.
