Today’s review is more than just a review. It’s also part story about my journey and it’s a giveaway too! I am proud to have been a part of The Scribes Anthology Trick or Treat Edition. All of you fellow Halloween lovers out there will agree that this holiday is worthy of celebrating all year long.
A group of scholars and writers from SNHU first came together to create the anthology in October of 2014. Their first edition came out in December 2014, with a holiday theme. I became good friends with the Editor-in Chief since the anthology’s start, and last summer I was invited to publish a short story in their Halloween edition. I began work on my short story, The Quiet in summer of 2015. I began to get a taste of the editing process as I worked on not only my own piece, but also helped Whiskey Black with her story, Dark Island. I came to realize that I really enjoyed editing. While I had previously thought that teaching was my only backup plan (if writing did not pay the bills), I came to see that I was much more suited for editing work. I was asked to join The Scribes’ editing team in September. The experience was more fulfilling than I could have imagined and has only solidified my plan to pursue editing along with writing.
The Scribes Anthology Trick or Treat Edition includes ten chilling stories that will keep you up at night- either because you are glued to the pages, or too afraid to fall asleep. You will read tales of murder, twisted minds, and the supernatural.
• The Black Dog of Dartmoor, by Jaclyn Wilson will provide you with the kind of suspense that makes you forget to breath: “No one has ever seen the black dog before. No one. So you, my boys are destined to fight it.”
• Gruesome scenes await you as you read stories such as Passage, by Jim McGrath: “I moved forward to my prey and slowly, almost lovingly, slashed open his femoral arteries, first the right, and then the left.”
• Twists awaits you in The Quarry County Carnival Massacre, by Kyler Richards and my own creation, The Quiet....I won’t say anything else about these.
• Characters with great depth lurk within the pages, as well as within their own twisted minds, like Claire from Amber E.Box’s Divided Innocence and Lily from D.M. Kilgore’s, The Song.
• You will also be greeted with the imagery of supernatural creatures. Whiskey Black demonstrates this is Dark Island: “On the other side of the clearing there were about a dozen figures, pale, sickly, and disfigured. One had a gaping hole in her chest and her ribcage was exposed.”
• The authors have a great talent for dark storytelling, as you will see in the terrifying tales The Mirror by Edi Cruz and The Dreamcatcher by L.A. Logan. Beautiful use of language also demonstrates the gift that our authors have for fiction, as in Amber. E. Box and Ronnie Lee Jeffire’s The Piano: “It was nearly Halloween and the leaves had already dropped, the trees more like twisted skeletons lining the streets as the cars paraded through.”
Our authors show a tremendous talent for dark storytelling that will continue you to haunt you beautifully…just the way you like. We would love it if you would check out THE SCRIBES ANTHOLOGY PAGE
